You are absolutely correct!! It does no good and is NOT compassionate to tell them that they are victims. I am an EMT. the number of overdoses we deal with on a daily basis is incredibly high and increasing.

And, I am a specialist with 'Crisis Intervention' and KNOW you're absolutely correct. Was once a Therapist and after a year was totally burnt-out when working with the Addicts...Especially, sexual addicts. Recreational use of any drug; prescription or not, is as playing with fire...And, the country is currently in a situation mirroring the Opium War carried out by Britain against China at around the same time as the U.S. Revolution was occuring...Which spread the Nobility's Navy thinner to increase probability of American victory.

The dynamics of this current attack through the Southern Border to enrich the already wealthy Establishment in positions of power where most of their 'Old Money Profits' were and continue to be made ARE THE SAME...Absolutely, the same to be understood for anybody capable of reading a bit of history.

With the subversion of Western/U.S. culture by Nobility since WWII...Curious about the real enemy enacting this segment of Global Warfare at the Southern Border; China, Britain or both in Global Conspiracy. The lax attitudes towards 'Recreational/Illicit' use of Drugs is only magnifying the problem geometrically. Greatly wish people to listen to Mr. Leake and you in this Comment Section...You both know what you speak of. Celebrities using Recreational/Illicit Drugs with the glamourization of it in Movies, T.V., Music Video's and all kinds of entertainment and media compounds the nightmare exponentially.

DO NOT MISS BEING IN SHOES SIMILAR TO YOURS.

I am not surprised. It was bad enough before Covid but worsened after shutdowns. I mean we were allowed to buy alcohol but not seeds for a garden. Give me a break. This is encouraged. And it is breaks my heart.

💯 Agree. Can’t go to Church, but can go to a Bar, Gyms were germ spreaders but buying in bulk at Costco was safe, can’t go paddle boarding or surfing, but sure, go buy some weed. Our Government sure cares for us! Reeeeeee!!!!

don't forget the legalization off marijuana. I was taught that no state law can supersede a federal law so how are drugs being legalized at the state level for recreational use? The government wants the masses high and stupid so the elites can continue to run rough shod over the people.

Agree! Weaponized compassion. Happening all around us . Virtue signalling of care and compassion while doing the opposite - creating pathways for harm and setting people up to fail . 'safe injection sites' (state funded drug use) , 'safe sex' (state supported emotional, mental, physical and sexual distorted views of sacred intimate relationships) 'safe and effective vaccines' (state funded sabotage of our immune system) 'safe and rare' abortions (state funded murder and torture - remember the fines and jail time if one destroys an eagle egg - also remember it's homicide if a pregnant is killed by a drink driver but health care if a child is unwanted) . May the scales from our eyes continue to be lifted and the lies continue to be exposed.

I liked your original article on Perry. The drug crisis is engineered, just like many other wars. Thanks for your stack.

Geo-political engineering. Exactly. Another war on humanity.

I think we can only engineer a crisis or more if the society has already deteriorated and we have deteriorated since back in the 1980s if not earlier....nothing happens overnight...

Expand full comment

I think the deterioration was engineered a long time before that...maybe hundreds of years or even longer. Of course this could all be my imagination, but it seems that there have been some very evil timelines as long as history started, with some very demonic stories passed down through generations and perhaps in our DNA, and it's our time to bring those to the light, transcend and build our beautiful present moments.

I actually can’t disagree. The Crusades from the Catholic Church an evil organization and all that you mention. I was just being conservative in my approach but you are totally correct.

It's so wonderful that we can put our attention on beauty and other stories to create and enjoy the simplicity of this present moment. x

I think you are correct. I grew up with a lot of pro-drug propaganda - Saturday Night Live (and it's movie Animal House) for example. Doing drugs and drinking to excess was portrayed as a lot of fun. Even after John Belushi (and so many others) died from drug overdose.

Sad how much influence the media, movies, tv, all of it, has on young people.

I read your post this morning and immediately sent it to my two 16 year olds. It's great to teach them some critical thinking skills. There's so much to learn from your post that we will discuss, not just about the stupidity of trying 'just one' drug, but also how to have a good debate on the facts and not resort to getting personal.

I completely agree with you! I live in a small town and so far no cannabis dispensaries. I see people all the time pushing for it. I hate it! I had a loved one who started using it after being drug free for 50 years. I couldn’t stand him. It totally changed his personality and it broke my heart. It was so sad. I tell my grandson all the time don’t use ANY drugs! Like you said the pain of regret is worth than the pain of self-sacrifice and discipline. Thank you!

In Hawaii, the cops say they cannot do anything because they don't know if someone is smoking they have no way to know if someone was approved for 'medical' use. I would smell the skunk wafting from cars as they drove by while I would be waiting to cross the street. Not to mention the horrible effects on pets. My mother was a drug addict, diet pills, bore 9 children and died at the age of 44. She was the life of party, always joking, dancing like there was no tomorrow. She was broken and searched for love but never found it. She blessed my life and I learned from her many heartaches.

I read this man's obituary, his children pointed out his youthful ambitions, many failures and disappointment he was their father. It made me sad. I wrote a comment that we are all broken people and need to have compassion, to understand the heartaches.

We are all broken people!

When I make a bad decision, I hurt myself and all around me, human suffering has no end, it cascades to others.

God found me and unconditionally loves me, protects, provides, and I have learned to forgive. I will not cast stones especially one who has passed on.

My son committed suicide, wasn't into drugs, his heart was broken. One of my greatest sorrows.

We need compassion and sensitivity as to why people are in great pain.

Loving God shows we love others. Loving others shows we love God. We are all broken.

So so very sorry….I tried to help a student at a university campus years ago; her husband told her that he didn’t want her any more, she had cut her thick waist length hair to about her ears, then she went back east where her mom lived, and later jumped from a bridge; her second try there, was the end. The week before the officers had talked her out of it. I sometimes remember her the first week of May.

OK--my turn! Its not black and white. For as long as humans have walked this planet they have imbibed in mood altering substances. Mostly Ceremonial. For some--it never becomes an issue but for many it becomes the one thing they turn to for solace and comfort. Its deep and its complicated--often related to family trauma--and every addicted individual will have their own driving force. When you look deeper we all nurse addictions of one sort or another--some are more dangerous while some are commendable in our society like workaholism--but there is food--porn --internet and even religion can slide into addiction. I don't think the solution is condemnation--these people are often drowning in self hatred to begin with. They need to learn to cherish themselves and this one body they have been given. I believe addictions are born at home--and then they are nursed in our society. Any one of us could be Matthew Perry.

Expand full comment

So well said, Kari. You are wise.

Your comment reminds me that many years ago I took a graduate psychology course on addictions with Dr. Andrew Weil at TC, Columbia University. If memory serves, he once asked us to divide ourselves into two groups – one group who believed they had no addictions to stand on one side of the room and the other group who believed they had an addiction to stand on the opposite side. He then asked the non-addiction group to raise their hands if anyone smoked or if anyone had to have their coffee (with caffeine of course) all day long. (He may have asked about other behaviors but I can’t remember.) Many people raised their hands, and Dr. Weil helped us understand that addiction behavior is on a continuum among people and is multiply determined.

Having compassion for others' suffering does not mean we think people are victims or should not be held accountable for what they do. But it does mean that, IMHO, there is no true "other." We are all connected. We are all a part of each other.

Dear Kari,

From the wisdom of your Dec. 23rd comment, I'd say you've completed your Ph.D. in life lessons. Your words are those of an old soul. :)

As a personal aside -- I only finished my degree (in spite of undiagnosed Lyme disease) because the higher voice that speaks to me when I meditate told me that I had to finish because some people would listen more carefully when I spoke or wrote about Spirit. (If you were interested, I wrote about that time period in my third Substack post.)

Wishing you many blessings,

This post, like the one this AM, is spot on. I've watched famiy and friends destroy themselves and others with their selfishness and hubris in their neverending addictions. Tough love and stern discipline for children, as the Proverbs say, will give children the ability to grow into adulthood fully functioning and productive. As you say, indulging them at every turn just weakens their character and spoils them .

Since Dr. McCullough is fantastic at citing research articles, I think that, as his coworker in this CD effort, it would be helpful if you would post some information on the proportion of addicts (and ODs) that started out as recreational drug users (given all the flames here about cannabis) and the proportion that got trapped in it from the "legitimate" pushing of opioids on the part of their medical professionals. Your harshness may be appropriate for the former group, but I think not so much for the latter, which I suspect — but don't know, hence the request — may be larger. When you talk about "education" about the dangers of recreational drugs and the havoc wreaked on friends and family, you haven't mentioned education about the criminality of the medical establishment, which is perhaps more to the point of the battle we're involved in here.

The breakdown of our society is apparent everywhere. We are on the brink of becoming a failed nation all because of a permissibility that everyone seems to have.
