I saw that FINA decision but I didn't like it, and it sent me into research mode. Like you I was a competitive sports person, not in swimming but in running sports. When I was 10, at primary school, very prepubescent, we were preparing for the inter-school sports. The teachers decided to have a race-off between the girl and boy representatives for each age - 8 vs 8, 9 vs 9 - I was the girl's age 10 representative and I was set up against the boy. But each girl got a 10 yard head start. The prepubescent boys beat the girls, even with a ten yard head start, except for me - I beat my boy by three yards. I had a very solid frame, muscular body, and I suppose that helped me at that age. My point is, prepubescent boys are still more athletic that even very competitive, equally active girls. What it's going to do is give MORE incentive to puberty-block the boys young, to give them the more complete range of options as a sterilized man, and STILL not be fair to the females.
I agree with you that most prepubescent boys still have an innate physical advantage over girls at the same age. I was faster than most boys in my age group (and my younger brothers) until they passed through puberty. I watched them grown taller and stronger and swim right past me. It was disheartening, but I accepted reality. I can't imagine my fifteen-year-old self competing against a boy. I feel very badly for these girls.
The FINA decision isn't perfect, but it's better than what we've had. It's a start. I suspect there won't be many boys who claim to be girls and haven't gone through puberty who will be competitive at the elite level. It's not clear whether USA Swimming or the NCAA will adopt the FINA rules, though. Competition must be fair at all levels.
Will (Lia) Thomas expressed his desire to compete in the Olympics. I'm grateful we won't be subject to that at least.

A council in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia (bottom of the world) couldn't even resolve to have third toilets for transgenders. In the end, I think it would have only hurt the girls. Anyone with a brain and a soul knows that Thomas did not win the women's title because he's not a woman. He's a man. I hope someday the record books will be corrected. In the meantime, we fight. I applaud Riley Gaines for taking time out of her life to fight the fight for younger women. I hope more young women will step up.

Valid points all. I've supported the boycott idea, but I think I was having a weak moment. Like you, I see the level of moving cogs on this as something much more sinister. People laugh (at me) when I say this is about the erasure of women, but to put it as politely as I can, those people can fuck off. This is about destroying the definition of human, and it starts with women (for several reasons, not the least of which is that nearly all sadistic, megalomaniacal predators are men).

I get the worldly needs. But the competition is no longer a competition. It's a controllers showpiece. Big sport professional sportspeople are paid employees of the sponsors, and the swimmers may as well understand that too. The controllers have ended the competition.
I think your comment above is astute. A single girl quietly pulling out of the comp would not have any impact and indeed it takes a while to process what's happening.

I saw that FINA decision but I didn't like it, and it sent me into research mode. Like you I was a competitive sports person, not in swimming but in running sports. When I was 10, at primary school, very prepubescent, we were preparing for the inter-school sports. The teachers decided to have a race-off between the girl and boy representatives for each age - 8 vs 8, 9 vs 9 - I was the girl's age 10 representative and I was set up against the boy. But each girl got a 10 yard head start. The prepubescent boys beat the girls, even with a ten yard head start, except for me - I beat my boy by three yards. I had a very solid frame, muscular body, and I suppose that helped me at that age. My point is, prepubescent boys are still more athletic that even very competitive, equally active girls. What it's going to do is give MORE incentive to puberty-block the boys young, to give them the more complete range of options as a sterilized man, and STILL not be fair to the females.

I agree with you that most prepubescent boys still have an innate physical advantage over girls at the same age. I was faster than most boys in my age group (and my younger brothers) until they passed through puberty. I watched them grown taller and stronger and swim right past me. It was disheartening, but I accepted reality. I can't imagine my fifteen-year-old self competing against a boy. I feel very badly for these girls.
The FINA decision isn't perfect, but it's better than what we've had. It's a start. I suspect there won't be many boys who claim to be girls and haven't gone through puberty who will be competitive at the elite level. It's not clear whether USA Swimming or the NCAA will adopt the FINA rules, though. Competition must be fair at all levels.
Will (Lia) Thomas expressed his desire to compete in the Olympics. I'm grateful we won't be subject to that at least.
There is big money and power behind this. It has nothing to do with affirmation or acceptance or civil rights or health.
In the end, Thomas's hopes for the Olympics were ended with this FINA ruling last year. The lower level bodies (USA Swimming, NCAA) may not follow the rules, but I suspect there's won't be many more "Lia Thomases".

It is isn't fair to the girls to ask them to not compete. They work hard to get to point where they can compete and to ask girls to make the sacrifices is to take us back to the time than women had no rights. It is the sports bodies and government that need to protect girls and women.

The controllers have ended the 'female' sports category if a male is competing. It doesn't exist. Some sort of study contract would've been voided.

She could have refused to participate, but I think her advocacy and activism in the time since would have been less powerful.

I don't actually disagree, but it ultimately comes down to whether you think the current 'game' is salvageable, in the sense it can be reformed or restored (like for instance based on DNA). If it isn't, then the only recourse is not to participate and set up your own game. One's desire to play in this game has to be reconciled with one's acceptance of its rules (fair or unfair).

A council in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia (bottom of the world) couldn't even resolve to have third toilets for transgenders.
