Many lay persons don’t know that our gastro-intestinal system is a major player in providing immunity to our lungs. By swallowing secretions (1-2 cups) normally per day and ~10 times that quantity during acute infections, we ingest a large number of viruses and bacteria from our nose, mouth, throat, and lungs. Dr. Robert Clancy is the world’s expert on this topic and deserves great credit over his storied career in breakthrough understanding of how the respiratory, immune, and gastrointestinal systems are all connected.
Please listen to the entire interview to get the key concepts of what Clancy has termed the “Common Mucosal System” and the innovation of giving “immunobiotics” or sterilized killed non-typable Hemophilus species (abbreviated NTH in the interview) in a tablet to patients in order to stimulate the immune system and protect the lungs from recurrent infections and pneumonia. His work cut serious infections in those with emphysema in half. Can you imagine how powerful this nonspecific oral, over-the-counter approach would be for the next pandemic?
