There is also Firefox and Librefox as the other browser base, although I have issues with Firefox and Mozilla in general. Ecosia is a metasearch engine who completely relies on Bing for its indexing. Brave search has its own search engine providing ~90% of the results, falling back on Bing per their statement mid last year.
OK, so what do you think of Presearch, SwissCows, I hear Startpage at least used to be ok, tho it was bought by a company that wasn't committed to privacy. What about Freespoke?
Sorry, I haven't tried any of those except for Presearch briefly early last year. It seems promising and I like the decentralized idea with the ability to participate and run a presearch node with the incentives. It's on my todo list actually. The results themselves from Presearch's own engine are just ok so far, not exceptional, but not bad. It seems like more people need to run nodes for the crawling/indexing and I guess it'll take time.
Sorry, that was a bit flippant of me to not specify chromium. I was more showing frustration for the fact that the browsers have all gone to a single platform. I may also be mistaken thinking that the topic was altered and untrustworthy search results, not privacy, which from the responses, it would appear to be. If the topic is privacy, I do author of The Practical Paranoia series books, so I'm fairly up to date on that topic
My comment on Ecosia is due to regular manual, personal testing of predefined searches and the subsequent results across all search engines interfaces. It's a non programmatic endeavor, but it is how I choose what engines I use. Duckduckgo was decent until about a month ago when it began matching narrative results.
I fully vetted in the Android sdk going back to the early Eclipse/Java interface and do know a good number of Linux distos, but thanks for the list. I generally just bounce between ubuntu and kali depending on the task, but I do keep a dozen others updated on flash drives for different needs.

I raised the point about Chrome vs Chromium (and the corresponding analogy about Android vs its derivative alternatives) in response to your post as I see that argument brought up against other browsers, where just because they're based on "Chrome" it implies if doesn't make a difference from getting away from Google, et. al.
As far as search, I am concerned about both privacy and results but like you more on the results. I also raised the point about Ecosia relying on Bing for indexing because although I think Bing is actually better than Google for results, they still censor and that will affect the many other search clients/front-end interfaces that rely on Bing too. But even those clients that rely on the same providers can providers can differ wildly on their ordering of results, so I assume that's where you see the difference between Ecosia vs DuckDuckGo?
For example, none show the original source of this video, originally posted to Infowars / Alex Jones site, with the interview conducted by Kristi Leigh, using the exact title:

nor does the source turn up even if you add a "site:banned.video" keyword, nor does it show up if you search for that exact url, only mirrors of that video cross posted on other sites show up.
That's because I know from about the time Alex Jones was deplatformed a few years ago until just in 2023 or right around Dec. 2022, his banned.video site was also de-indexed across all the search providers. So there's been no indexing of anything directly from banned.videos even when I tried middle of 2022. specifying site:banned.video would literally turn up nothing. Only now did Bing, et. al start resuming including them in results, but that doesn't capture the older videos. The same thing happened with bitchute also until recently. I assumed backlash from the Great Reset after finding alt tech and co on the rise caused some of them to at least partially reverse course.
The same is true for DMCA'd sites, files and/or urls.
One interesting test case for such is something like this:
you can find the same t-shirts elsewhere, but if you try to search using those exact urls, the results indicates those exact urls (not the domains) been delisted from the major search engines, which includes Ecosia, DDG, etc
The Practical Paranoia series covers the basic mainstream operating systems. Each is a different book. I have the unenviable and highly ironic task of dealing with the ones covering how to secure your Win 10 and Win 11 machines.
A bit of backstory/overview here is probably needed to set a baseline. There is no such thing as security. The words safe and secure are marketing terminology that have no real world applicability. No one has ever been safe and nothing has ever been secure.
That being said, the series takes the user from a point of complete vulnerability to a level well above the lower hanging fruit. Personally, I design security strategies based on increasing the general tediousness one faces when attempting penetration. Nothing will stop a determined individual with minimal skills, but if my assets are less attractive due to the level of effort required being way more than the next device, an attacker with bills to pay will follow the path of least resistance.
That, of course, is worthless against agency efforts, but it keeps the flies out the eyes when the cannons are firing on you. That's the best way I can describe the books. Gives one that extra microsecond to adapt and those add up.
Now to the data and search stuff. When Google terminated the Google AJAX Search API in 2013, we lost a million+ Libraries of Alexandria. That was the last time anyone had a way to query the "pure data" (for lack of a better term.) Every search query since then has gone through some iteration of a filtered and corruptible interface.
It's an imperfect world and I can accept the limitations on the veracity of the results so long as the they come back with something that can be sifted/analyzed/viewed through experience to get at bits of veracity. I used DDG for years but in the last month, they shifted hard into fact omission. Ecosia will go the same way before too long, but as of today, it is slightly better at wringing some level of objective info out of Bing.

I replied to another comment with my apologies on mistaking the topic of the article. I was thinking it was on unreliable search results and censored information. Basically, I was thinking this was a nefarious "web reputation management" topic, not a privacy one.
If it is about privacy, then it is moot for the most part because your hardware itself is fingerprinting your device for activity collection at all times, so no software, vpn, or mythical ghostware will hide anything you do.
The tpm 2.0 or equivalent on your device maps the exact hardware fingerprint built in your machine and encrypts all connections, info, etc. and is the security handshake port for every connection, which makes tracking anyone's device instantaneous, automatic and quiet. So, switching to brave gains you nothing, really.
If you want privacy, airgap and hermit would be about it for options until someone starts heavy slinging back alley tpm chips. I mean, they are , but availability is limited.

I completely agree about YT. I was censored three times on there and I was just commenting on a video. Same with FB. I deleted my account after they kept threatening me and went to Brighteon.Social. I am so much happier to be able to say what I want without threat of being censored. I also heard Lara Logan say that YT uses their platform to traffic children. I agree. People need to blacklist YT. I'd like to self correct here. I guess he is a doctor, but not a medical doctor. They really need to figure an easy way to say this. Because seeing the way he behaves in the first and subsequent videos is disturbing, and an even more disturbing prospect if he had to take care of patients.

I raised the point about Chrome vs Chromium (and the corresponding analogy about Android vs its derivative alternatives) in response to your post as I see that argument brought up against other browsers, where just because they're based on "Chrome" it implies if doesn't make a difference from getting away from Google, et. al.
As far as search, I am concerned about both privacy and results but like you more on the results. I also raised the point about Ecosia relying on Bing for indexing because although I think Bing is actually better than Google for results, they still censor and that will affect the many other search clients/front-end interfaces that rely on Bing too. But even those clients that rely on the same providers can providers can differ wildly on their ordering of results, so I assume that's where you see the difference between Ecosia vs DuckDuckGo?

That's because I know from about the time Alex Jones was deplatformed a few years ago until just in 2023 or right around Dec. 2022, his banned.video site was also de-indexed across all the search providers. So there's been no indexing of anything directly from banned.videos even when I tried middle of 2022. specifying site:banned.video would literally turn up nothing. Only now did Bing, et. al start resuming including them in results, but that doesn't capture the older videos. The same thing happened with bitchute also until recently. I assumed backlash from the Great Reset after finding alt tech and co on the rise caused some of them to at least partially reverse course.
The same is true for DMCA'd sites, files and/or urls.
One interesting test case for such is something like this:

you can find the same t-shirts elsewhere, but if you try to search using those exact urls, the results indicates those exact urls (not the domains) been delisted from the major search engines, which includes Ecosia, DDG, etc
The Practical Paranoia series covers the basic mainstream operating systems. Each is a different book. I have the unenviable and highly ironic task of dealing with the ones covering how to secure your Win 10 and Win 11 machines.
A bit of backstory/overview here is probably needed to set a baseline. There is no such thing as security. The words safe and secure are marketing terminology that have no real world applicability. No one has ever been safe and nothing has ever been secure.
That being said, the series takes the user from a point of complete vulnerability to a level well above the lower hanging fruit. Personally, I design security strategies based on increasing the general tediousness one faces when attempting penetration. Nothing will stop a determined individual with minimal skills, but if my assets are less attractive due to the level of effort required being way more than the next device, an attacker with bills to pay will follow the path of least resistance.
That, of course, is worthless against agency efforts, but it keeps the flies out the eyes when the cannons are firing on you. That's the best way I can describe the books. Gives one that extra microsecond to adapt and those add up.
Now to the data and search stuff. When Google terminated the Google AJAX Search API in 2013, we lost a million+ Libraries of Alexandria. That was the last time anyone had a way to query the "pure data" (for lack of a better term.) Every search query since then has gone through some iteration of a filtered and corruptible interface.
It's an imperfect world and I can accept the limitations on the veracity of the results so long as the they come back with something that can be sifted/analyzed/viewed through experience to get at bits of veracity. I used DDG for years but in the last month, they shifted hard into fact omission. Ecosia will go the same way before too long, but as of today, it is slightly better at wringing some level of objective info out of Bing.
My first comment was primarily a reactionary epithet to the situation we are in. It's our fault. We got here on our own, but I am really straining to see a way we get out our present enforced ignorance.

I replied to another comment with my apologies on mistaking the topic of the article. I was thinking it was on unreliable search results and censored information. Basically, I was thinking this was a nefarious "web reputation management" topic, not a privacy one.
If it is about privacy, then it is moot for the most part because your hardware itself is fingerprinting your device for activity collection at all times, so no software, vpn, or mythical ghostware will hide anything you do.
The tpm 2.0 or equivalent on your device maps the exact hardware fingerprint built in your machine and encrypts all connections, info, etc. and is the security handshake port for every connection, which makes tracking anyone's device instantaneous, automatic and quiet. So, switching to brave gains you nothing, really.
If you want privacy, airgap and hermit would be about it for options until someone starts heavy slinging back alley tpm chips. I mean, they are , but availability is limited.
Valid points, although there are a lot of people who will not even look at any video that is hosted on any other website, like rumble or Odyssey, because people have become so excessively blinded by partisan politics. So posting it on YouTube, at least for some people, makes it more accessible.

I completely agree about YT. I was censored three times on there and I was just commenting on a video. Same with FB. I deleted my account after they kept threatening me and went to Brighteon.Social. I'd like to self correct here. I guess he is a doctor, but not a medical doctor. They really need to figure an easy way to say this. Because seeing the way he behaves in the first and subsequent videos is disturbing, and an even more disturbing prospect if he had to take care of patients.

There is reason for confusion though. Throughout the story, he is often referred to as a high up executive and a consultant. Early and often he is not referred to as "a doctor" which made me think that there was another video released. I would have put a modifier in the headline or mentioned him by name or something to make it clear to those of us who are well-acquainted with the story.

Mr. Leake, taking from the lessons I learned in Iraq, I believe the way to defeat this technological barrier is to go low tech.

He is a Urologist. He used to have a practice in Dallas from what I was able to dig up. Did his surgical residency in Boston. Authored some research articles as well.
