I find some of the funniest literature written before the common era.
Even historical accounts, as in "Castle, Keeps, and Ruins of England and Wales" (ca1872, $2.50 at thrift store) tells shimmering crazy accounts of protecting castle and keep as well of the record of the centuries of transferring them from one faithful vassal, then being stripped and given to another over a simple sleight.
