John. My first career was as a marine engineer (many years ago). IMHO, you (and many others) are looking in the wrong place as to the cause of the collision. Most people are focused on the bridge and on the actions of the captain and/or pilots there. These folks up on the bridge had little or nothing to do with this collision. The cause was, is and always will be the fact that THE SHIP LOST POWER FOR A SIGNIFICANT PERIOD OF TIME, in a narrow channel, while moving at a pretty good clip, with no tugboats around, all while heading toward a bridge underpass. When that happens, the ability of the captain or pilot to fix the mess is quite limited. So, if you want to find the predominant/preponderant cause, you need to look in the ENGINE ROOM (where the marine engineers are). My guess is it was probably a blocked fuel line (dirty fuel filter?) or perhaps (due to human error), they accidentally tapped out/emptied whatever fuel tank they were drawing fuel from and it caused the main engine to stall but got it started again by tapping a different fuel tank. Various sources have said that the ship engine/propeller was going "full astern" just before hitting the bridge. When a ship is full astern, the rudder direction is somewhat insignificant. In the case of the Dali, a full-astern propeller will walk the stern of the ship to port (left) and therefore the bow will move starboard. Now, one could argue whether or not calling for full astern was the best move by the captain but like I said his ability to fix this was limited.... In conclusion, anyone with any knowledge of this industry that I know seem to all agree that this was some sort of human error in the engine department, which caused a mechanical failure at a very, VERY inopportune time. I am sure that you are very knowledgeable about the subject and undoubtedly the FBI will come up with a reasonable explanation such as what you outlined. However, just like 9/11, this incident smells and WE KNOW that our governments will sacrifice lives for what they perceive as “the greater good”.

I, too, have little faith in any FBI investigation. Hopefully, there are private investigators looking into this event. Maybe even a few investigative journalists will take this on. But beware: many will have predetermined conclusions based on their funding source. Nowadays, the almighty dollar takes precedence over the truth.
