I suppose you can say anything about yourself as long as you don’t treat patients. There are cardiac surgeons who do breast augmentation. They claim they are chest specialists. There are very few regulations in medicine. I’m sure others could list example after example of the insanity that goes on in the American medical system.
I believe that a licensed MD who has credentials in dermatology can legally perform brain surgery. However, it would be up to the hospital to decide if it wants to credential the MD, allowing him to perform surgery there. Hopefully patients do due diligence in choosing their MD. We know this often doesn’t happen. I remember a local dermatologist being sued by the family of a 20-something year old who died on the operating room table when that MD was performing liposuction on her.
Sadly, it’s difficult to choose a good MD. Patients often don’t know where to find the list of the physicians credentials. Even when found, evaluating the credentials is confusing. Terms like “cosmetic surgeon” don’t qualify as credentials. It’s simply a descriptive term. There is no officially recognized “cosmetic surgery” board. (There are weekend courses. Seriously, there are)
“Board-certified” is a meaningless term unless the particular board certification is listed. A physician can be “board certified” in OB/GYN legally, but exclude “OB/GYN” & call himself a “cosmetic surgeon.” However, he IS board certified in some type of official, legal medical board.
