Since the outside of the pandemic, the French authorities have been in relentless pursuit of their own most notable microbiologists, Dr. Didier Raoult. Raoult was brazen in his approach to the illness in offering a comprehensive outpatient treatment program including a day-hospital in Marseilles, France. This is a city heavily populated by elderly, retired Europeans who were at high risk for COVID-19 hospitalization and death. You can imagine how Raoult embarrassed the public health authorities and administrators within Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire en Maladies Infectieuses de Marseille (IHU Méditerranée Infection) who were content with therapeutic nihilism promoted by governments in lockstep all over the world.
Dr. Raoult is featured in Chapter 3 of our book Courage to Face COVID-19 with the chapter title “Gandalf of Marseille” hinting at the brash appearance of the French scientist with a long-braided pony-tail trailing down his back. You should re-read this chapter to get to know Dr. Raoult better for he has a long and storied family and personal history dedicated to battling infectious threats to mankind.
